Webvision Cloud sites achieve high scores on Google Page Speed Insights

We have recently been testing our new Webvision Cloud platform using Google Page Speed tests and can confirm that they have been performing very well.

What is Google Page Speed?

‘Page Speed Insights measures the performance of a page for mobile devices and desktop devices. It fetches the URL twice, once with a mobile user-agent, and once with a desktop user-agent. The PageSpeed Score ranges from 0 to 100 points. A higher score is better and a score of 85 or above indicates that the page is performing well.’

With the main goal of your website being to provide an engaging experience for your audience, so the speed in which it loads is vital to the overall customer experience. According to Adobe ‘39% of people will stop engaging with a website if images won’t load or take too long to load.’ This tool allows you to find out how your website is performing and will give advice as to how to improve your score. The better the score, the faster your page will render on a user’s mobile and or computer, keeping your users happy.

What have we done?

At Abacus, we have optimised and fine-tuned a number of small details to improve the score of our websites. These include compressing files from the server and automatically optimising images to their optimum file size.

How do our sites compare?

In determining how a site utilising Webvision Cloud scored favourably, we compared it against other leading national and commercial publishing news sites running on different content management platforms.

What stands in the way of a 100/100 score?

It is very difficult to get 100/100. Many things can stand in the way of achieving this, with the main culprits being images that Google will believe needs to be optimised a bit more and third-party scripts that include, ironically, Google Analytics!

PageSpeed Insight scores can continually change as new rules and algorithms are put in place. This was demonstrated in April 2015 when algorithmic changes came into effect– widely referred to across the internet as ‘mobilegeddon’.
